WINE MARKETING/BRAND MANAGEMENT

Wine jobs in marketing are open to anyone with a background in marketing, not necessarily gained in the wine industry. You will be responsible for cultivating the public image of the brand and developing marketing campaigns. These wine jobs are suited to those who possess excellent communication skills and the ability to think creatively.

CELLAR HAND

These entry-level wine jobs are based around assisting winemakers with the vinification process. You will assist with harvesting, labelling and bottling, fermentation and analysis. These wine jobs are perfect for those looking to gain their first job in winemaking.

CELLAR WORKER

As a cellar worker, you will get hands-on experience in cellar and harvest operations. You will ensure that wine harvest, cellar and barrel operations comply with all safety and operating procedures. A job in this area requires good people skills and attention to detail.

ENOLOGIST

In charge of the wine quality assurance lab in order to meet ultra-premium quality standards.

GROUNDS SUPERVISOR

As a grounds supervisor, you will get the chance to work outside. You may be responsible for plantings, tree trimming and spraying.

HARVEST INTERN

This entry-level position is great if you are just starting out in the wine industry. Being a harvest intern or cellar hand can give you good experience in winemaking. Interns may do:

  • barrel work
  • fermentation
  • fruit sorting
  • lot monitoring
  • sanitation
  • vineyard and lab analysis

     

    LAB TECHNICIAN

    As a lab technician, you would be charged with monitoring musts and wines for quality. You would also perform, evaluate, identify and maintain microbiological tests. In some cases, lab technicians are also responsible for bottling line quality assurance. Other tasks include obtaining samples, performing chemical analyses and instrumental analyses.

    LIQUOR BLENDER

    Controls equipment to regauge, filter, rectify, blend, and verify proof of whiskeys and other distilled liquors, preparatory to bottling.

    SOMMELIER

    Sommelier wine jobs are geared towards those with exceptionally sensitive taste buds and a passion for wine. Sommeliers are employed by hotels and restaurants and their job is to compose a wine list and match wines with different foods. Often they will visit diners at their table and talk them through the wine list, offering samples to smell and taste. Many start in these wine jobs as apprentice to a head Sommelier, or embark on professional courses.

    TASTING ROOM SALES

    Working in the tasting room of a winery, you would be responsible for conducting tastings, managing wine sales and leading consumer and trade tours. Wine sales jobs require excellent customer service skills, as well as a thorough knowledge of wine vintages.

    TOUR GUIDE

    Tour guides lead tours at the various estates, vineyards and esteemed wine cellars. Tour guides should be passionate about educating people about the wonders of wine.

    TRADER

    These wine jobs involve liaising between wine sellers and buyers. Wine houses rarely sell direct to customers so these sales-based wine jobs ae an important part of the industry. You need excellent wine knowledge and the ability to form and maintain effective professional relationships. Traders are either employed by wine sellers or work freelance.

    VINEYARD MANAGER

    Vineyard managers orchestrate a vineyard and farm management plan. In a wine manager job, you would work closely with the winemaker to maximize overall quality. The position may include planning, scheduling, crop load management, harvest coordination and planting.

    VITICULTURALIST

    A Viticulturalist helps monitor and manage a vineyard. They work with a wide range of grape varieties and winemakers.

    VITICULTURE INSPECTOR

    Some colleges have teaching vineyards. As a viticulture instructor, you would possibly lead the college’s degree program in viticulture, teach courses on viticulture and develop the teaching vineyard.

    WINE EDUCATOR

    A wine educator conveys to visitors, VIPs, retailers, restaurateurs, hoteliers and distributors—in a passionate and intellectually compelling manner—the image, style and values of a certain vineyard. You must possess excellent communication skills, in both writing and speaking, to be a wine educator.

    WINE MERCHANT

    Merchant - or retailer - roles are specialist wine jobs which involve seeking and buying products from wineries to sell in the UK. The job involves a lot of overseas travel, visiting vineyards to seek out new wines and sample produce. These wine jobs suit those with a good knowledge of and passion for wine.

    WINE PASTEURISER

    Wine Pasteurizers oversee the wine pasteurization process and equipment.

    WINE STERILISER

    Wine Sterilisers ensure that the containers involved with wine production are sterile.

    WINERY WORKER

    Performs any combination of vital tasks involved in winemaking

    WINEMAKER

    The Winemaker will be involved in all decisions during the winemaking process.
